20. The Person And Work Of The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is true God and a true and distinct Person in the Godhead, equal in power and glory with the Father and the Son;1 for he bears a divine name,2 and has divine attributes;3 divine worship is paid him;4 and divine acts have been and are being done by him, which none but God could have done or can do.5 Though it is the Godhead of the three Persons that works all things, yet distinctive operations are ascribed to each Person: creation and election to the Father, redemption to the Son, sanctifying and sealing to the Holy Spirit.6 To the Holy Spirit is also ascribed the forming of Christ’s human nature holy in the Virgin’s womb,7 and the endowing of it with every grace and gift without measure.8 The writers of Scripture spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.9 He calls and endows men for, and sends them into the work of the ministry, and gives them success.10 He convinces11 and regenerates sinners,12 guides13 and comforts14 the children of God, and will raise them up at the last day.15

The work of the Holy Spirit in those who will be saved to eternal life is a gracious,16 holy,17 effectual,18 and abiding19 work, according to the eternal covenant,20 the effect of eternal love,21 and the fruit of the meritorious redemption.22
